As part of the Government’s retail energy market reforms a new regulated electricity offer, Solar Sharer, will be introduced next year across NSW, South Australia and South East Queensland.
This will require retailers to offer free electricity to households for at least three hours in the middle of the day when solar generation is at its peak. This applies to houses that have solar on their roofs and those that don’t – all you’ll need is a smart meter.
Free daytime power for families across Australia is proof that what’s good for the planet is good for your pocket
Australians deserve a fairer go when it comes to their energy bills. In our second term, we’re getting on with delivering reform to ensure that no household or business pays more than they should.
What is the Solar Sharer Offer?
The Solar Sharer Offer is about making sure we make the most of our huge solar generation, including by ensuring the benefits of cheap solar can be shared with consumers who don’t have solar systems themselves.
It will provide direct bill savings for households who sign up and can move more of their energy use into the zero cost power period, while also lowering costs for all consumers by lowering evening peak prices and lowering network and system security costs.
The Government will consult with states and territories on national rollout.
What if you don’t have a smart meter – how much does it cost to get a smart meter?
Almost 60% of customers already have smart meters (58.3%), and from 1 December 2025 retailers will be obliged to replace old meters in need of replacement with smart meters at no cost to customers.
