LABOR BACKS BID FOR THE 2023 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has today declared Labor’s support for the Football Federation Australia’s (FFA’s) bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In Adelaide ahead of the Socceroos match against Saudi Arabia tonight, Mr Shorten said hosting the women’s tournament would be great for women’s participation in sport in Australia.

With the Socceroos playing a crucial World Cup qualifier in Adelaide tonight, it is easy to imagine how great it would be to host such an important international tournament in Australia.

Labor urges the Turnbull Government to support the FFA’s bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Matildas are a champion team and deserve the same coverage and equal treatment to our Socceroos team.

Not only would an event like this bring a significant number of visitors to Australia, along with the associated economic benefits, but hosting an event like the Women’s World Cup would put women’s sport in Australia on the international stage and inspire a whole new generation of girls to pursue their sporting dreams.

Labor wants to see Australia host the Women’s World Cup in 2023 and we hope the Turnbull Government will get on board.

Labor is committed to supporting ongoing growth in women’s participation in sport – we are committed to supporting continued improvements in opportunity, in participation and in professionalism.
